Nicolette's 7th Birthday

There's so many things on my mind about this birthday.

There's the very real idea that my baby...my youngest...is growing up. Now don't get me wrong...she's still young. And she still needs me.

But not as much.

And there is no one beneath her to need me. She's the...(gulp)...last.

It should be kind of a celebration. See, we started our family so young...that while all our friends were out dating and being rowdy singles, we were already changing diapers. And then when they were newly married and "honeymoon-ing", we were carpooling to preschool. They were on couples cruises, and we were scraping money together to buy a house, afford dentists, and and buy a bigger car that would fit an entire row of car seats.

We consoled ourselves that we would be done just as everyone else was in the throes of child-rearing. By our calculations...our baby would be 18 when we were only 46 and 48, respectively. We'd be YOUNG...and empty-nesters. And we'd be able to go out and do all the fun stuff we missed out on.

When we'd share our theory with our parents, they's always say something like: "Yeah...but kids come back," or some such nonesense.

But now...I can see the end of the tunnel. That magic time...when all my kids are grown and gone...is only about a decade away.

And time, it seems to me, moves remarkably fast lately. Like I'm stuck in warp drive.

And suddenly...it doesn't look so fun to be an empty-nester. Remarkably...I'm kinda hoping that kids DO come back.

So as Nicolette celebrates this birthday...I have a mild heart attack. It's small...just a stutter in some far corner of my chest. But it doesn't dissipate. In fact, I have the sinking suspicion that for the next ten years or so...it's only going to grow.

It's aggravated by the fact that as we are preparing for Nicolette's birthday, I am paying Kaitlyns application fees for college.

Like...when did THAT happen? I mean...I KNEW it was happening. I've been preparing and pushing and nagging her for years to be able to be in the position she is in now...preparing for higher education. And all the time I was doing it...I felt like the time was SO FAR AWAY. We had AGES.

And now...here I am.

Actually DOING it.

And instead of jumping around and whooping for joy...I'm utterly perplexed.

Wait...it's here? Already? But wasn't she just a freshman or something?

So all my kids are doing this amazing thing called GROWING UP. And when they were all small...I couldn't imagine it ever happening. It's not that I was one of those parents that couldn't WAIT for their kids to get older...I just honestly couldn't FATHOM it.

They would always be here, right?

Under foot?

Needing help?

Asking questions?

Discovering their world?

Holding my hand?

What do you mean Joseph is graduating middle school and preparing for high school?

I'm sorry...did you say Savannah STARTED middle school this year?

And Brigham? Oh...he's only 5 years old. No wait...he's NINE you say? No...that can't be right...

And yes, yes...Kate is GRADUATING. I know, I know...I know...

And wittle bittle Nickel-Pickel...she doesn't want me to talk like that anymore? To call her that adorable little pet name anymore?

Why not?

It EMBARRASSES her?

Oh.

Okay.

(Dramatic pause inserted here. I'm literally sitting here staring at my keyboard...knowing that I am supposed to be writing about Nicolettes fun-filled, wonderful birthday. But all I can do is just...sit. And contemplate. I'm kind of struck dumb. Give me a minute...let me pull it together...)

Ahem...

The funny thing about the years in which we allow the children to pick a family activity for their birthday is that sometimes they pick things that not EVERYONE wants to do. For example, Savannah picked Color Me Mine...a ceramics studio. The boys moaned and complained about it for days...and then after they arrived, they discovered that they actually REALLY enjoyed going.

Or when Joseph picked Ski Rixen...an activity we all went to...but only Joseph (and Jason) could participate in because of age restrictions on the activity itself.

So...Nicolette's choice was the same kind of scenario. Except...she picked a place popular with the little kids...but a dreaded establishment of chaos for the adults.

She choose...Chuck E. Cheese.

Ohhhh...there is no place more feared and robustly avoided than that giant mouse infested kiddie casino. And yet...it was Nicolette's birthday. Hence...it was HER choice.

We tried to persuade her to choose a different venue. We even threw out some suggestions that we realistically could not afford. But she stood firm in her decision...and Chuck E. Cheese it was.

Thankfully, we picked a slower night. The usual riff-raff was there...trailer park trash and ghetto bunny mommas all huddled into too small booths devouring overly greasy pizza while their hellion broods ran amok throughout the place. But we found ourselves a quieter corner. And with Kaitlyn and Josephs help, we were able to assign a "chaperone" to everyone so they could play the games fairly and collect their all-too-precious tickets to cash in on their all-too-junkie prizes.

And once Jason and I let go of our mutual contempt, we thoroughly enjoyed watching Nicolette happily skip from game to game collecting tickets...and were even surprised and PLEASED to see her older siblings win tickets and give them TO her (it was, after all, HER birthday) without any provocation from Jason or I.

Afterwards, we went to Yogurtland and let her load up on frozen yogurt and toppings...

...and then headed home to unwrap gifts. It was, all in all, a huge success.

I thought I would share just a couple photos from the evening that normally wouldn't make the cut. I am doing so because they feature Nicolette unintentionally giving some of the funniest expressions I have EVER seen. I was, quite literally, ROLLING while I uploaded these pics.

I hope they make you laugh, too. And from afar, wherever you are, I hope you wish Nicolette a very Happy 7th Birthday.

Meanwhile...I think I'll look into retirement homes or something.

Crazy Girl Scout Weekend...

I had a crazy Girl Scout weekend this weekend...with activities every day of the weekend.

On Friday night, we had Thinking Day...a world-wide celebration of the Girl Scout/Girl Guide movement where girls think about and celebrate their "sisters" all over the world. This year, our troop had a booth...we represented Spain (gee...wonder who picked THAT country?).

Our board for Thinking Day...

Other troops made booths with other countries, and the girls traveled around from booth to booth with a "passport"...they got stamps in it from the various countries represented and had the opportunity to buy SWAPS and food samples and learn about Girl Scouts from the country being represented.

My Daisy World Travelers...

My Junior World travelers...

That night, the girls also participated in a massive service project assembling hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to distribute to our local homeless community.

It's a PB&J mess for a GOOD CAUSE!!

The next day, my Juniors visited Old Davie Schoolhouse to get started on their Bronze Award project...helping Old Davie identify and correctly label several fruit trees they have planted on property.

Can you guess the  trees just by this blossom?

We were lucky to visit during Davie's Orange Blossom Festival and Rodeo, and get to see the schoolhouse in action...serving the community by offering educational experiences and allowing people to learn about what it was like to live in Florida during different time periods.

The docents taught the girls about pioneer life in Florida...

...and prepared delicious food for them to feast upon!!

That evening, my Junior troop attended a big council activity called Mall Madness...a lock-in at a mall.

Ready to shop till we drop!! (literally)

It's attended by 2,500 Girl Scouts of all ages (yes...that IS NOT a typo...two-thousand-five-hundred)...stores stay open so the girls can shop all night long (it runs from 10pm until 5am), there are DJ's, bounce houses, rock walls, bungee jumpers, craft tables, henna tattoos, face painting, games and scavenger hunts...and did I mention the shopping?

Getting our shop on at ALL the little girl favorites...Justice, the Gap, and Claires!!

I had a cancellation at the last minute, and so I took Nicolette as a replacement. She had a BLAST...and kept up with the big girls. In fact, some of my older girls passed out...but Nicolette never slowed...she had her ears pierced at Claires at 3:30am, and could be found dancing ON THE STAGE at 4:40am.

Nicolette holds my hand in anticipation of the pain...but she never cried or yelped!!

Look at my big all-grown-up girl with PIERCED EARS!!

We had a lot of fun...it was better than I expected...although still too expensive for my tastes...but I imagine that we WILL be doing it again...

Now it's early Sunday morning...and I have to get ready for church, come home and bake cakes and clean, and then attend a Missionary Homecoming Open House. I haven't slept in 24 hours...and it doesn't look like I'll be sleeping anytime soon...

No rest for the wicked?

Well...if it's wicked to be a Girl Scout leader...then the answer is: "YES!!"

Renassiance Festival 2011...Part One

I took my cutie little Daisy Scouts to the Ren Fest today. It was their first time...

...can I get a collective "awwwwwwwww"?

We got to do all the cute little girl things that my bigger Junior Scouts are "too cool" to do...like attend "Princess Lessons"...

Meet the newest Princesses in the land...my Darling Darling daisy Scouts...

I even brought Brigham along, because he's a Cub Scout now and has never been to the Ren Fest, either...

Brigham didn't WANT to go with the Daisies at first, but ended up having a great time...

We did the activities that are ALWAYS favorites...like visiting the Games Field...

The biggest Jenga game EVER...

Playing Giant Chess...

Of course, we met LOTS of interesting characters...

The Catepillar/Butterfly Guy...

Urinia and Excretia, who clean the privies...the girls were grossed out and fascinated all at once...Brig thought it was genius!!

Fashion divas who sell their wares to the Duke of Bloomingdale and Lord Taylor...love the tongue in cheek humor around here...

We saw some great shows...the joust, the sword swallower, the parade, and a beautiful glass-blowing demonstration...

Kids...don't do this at home...

We cheered for Sir Roderick...the BAD GUY...although his squire kept saying he wasn't BAD...he was simply "morally grey"...

My little Daisy Scouts had a GREAT time...and enjoyed the food, fun, and merriment that goes along with the Renaissance Festival...and were innocent enough to not register the bawdiness...

Invest in the Ren Fest...their stocks are sound...

Or maybe it was just all the orange soda that kept them so happy?

Hehehehe...

Either way...it was a good day!!

Masquerade Ball!!

Ready to PAR-TAY!!!

I got the chance to attend a Girl Scout Masquerade Ball with my girls last night.

And I don't just mean my "Girl Scout girls"...I mean MY girls...in the biological sense.

Now that Nicolette is an official Daisy Scout, I get to attend some activities with BOTH my daughters. Sure...sometimes we split up if age is an issue...but I really relish the times I get to be with both.

I really love being able to spend time with both my little ladies. And I also really love eliminating the whine factor every time I take off on a GS activity and Nicolette wants to goooooooooo...

Last night was one of those times, were we all got to dress up in our Mardi Gras favorites and dance the night away.

The Daisies learn the Macarena!!

There was pizza and pasta and cake (of which I had none...it was my last day on Master Cleanse...a- whole-NOTHER reason to celebrate!!!), a DJ spinning tunes all night long...

C'mon Daisies...let the big girls show you how it's done...

...pictures with the troops...and PRIZES (Savannah won a $15 gift card to Justice, which she can use at Mall Madness in a couple weeks!!).

Kat and Savvy show their FUN-KAY side...

We had a GREAT time...but in typical Johnson (or should I say "Shannan"?) fashion...there was a hiccup...I had bought this luxurious feather boa to go with my mask and outfit...and I was stroking it and playing with it all night. About halfway through the night, I looked down, and my hands were BLUE!!!

Uhhhh...Blue Woman Group, perhaps?

The dye had apparently worn off the boa and onto my hands AND the back of my neck!! After SEVERAL washings, it STILL wouldn't come off.

As I sit here typing this the morning after with blue hands, I can't help feel rather disappointed. I had hoped to use the boa in my Valentines Night ensemble I had especially picked out for Jason...

...but unless he's into Smurfs, I just don't think it's gonna work...

Blue in Florida,

O Christmas Tree!!!

There is something I love about a Christmas tree before it is weighed down with all the trimmings and trappings of the season. It's so simple. So elegant.

A blank canvas symbolizing all a child's hopes for Christmas morning.

One of my FAVORITE parts of my Christmas tree is my Christmas tree skirt. I bought it back in Chicago when I was working for Crate & Barrel (BEST job, BEST company EVER). It's sad, really...that it gets covered up so completely and you don't get to enjoy it all season. Maybe this year, I'll avoid actually putting gifts UNDER the tree and instead put them AROUND the tree.

This year for our annual Christmas Tree decorating FHE, Joseph played Santa. It's a big job...but I think he was just the right man for the job...

Jason's ornament was an ESPN Santa. It says about 5 super funny things...my favorite of which is: "That's it!! Show's over!! Mrs. Claus...Big Daddys' comin' home!!" It makes me laugh because "Big Daddy" is actually Jason's nickname every place he has worked, thanks to having such a large family. So every time there was some kind of team competition between stores, Jason's team shirt always had his number and "Big Daddy" screen-printed across the back.

Here's a close-up. You can't see it...but Santa is actually wearing shiny green exercise shorts under the desk!!

My ornament is so indicative of my life as a mom. It is an adorable washing machine that spins and lights up. I guess symbolic of the biggest chore I do around here...

Next year, Jason said he'll buy me the matching dryer!!

Rock On, Kaitlyn...Rock On. Especially with that super cute electric guitar that sings "Jingle Bell Rock"!

I love the jingle bell detail on this guitar!!!

Joseph got the next set in his "Snow Buddies" series. I was afraid that he was too big for it this year...and i asked him if he was ready to get some more...grown-up...ornaments. But he said: "No way!!!"
I love my boy.

And this year his Snow Buddy is friendly with an Artic Seal pup!!! How cute!!!

Savannah got the next ornament in her "Snowball and Tuxedo" series. She loves how furry and glittery her ornaments are, and she and Joseph have a running disagreement about whose series is the cutest.

Personally, I think it is kind of a tie...

Brighams love of trains continues unabated this year, and his ornament is a flashy number that lights up, moves, AND makes train noises!! Whoo-Whoo!!!!

What a fun ornament to have this year!!

Nicolette also continues with her fairy series this year, getting this playful "Marigold Fairy" to add to her collection.

If you ask Nicolette why her series is fairies, she'll tell you that it's because she has "Pixie Ears"!!! (and she really does!!)

This year, thanks to being a week out of surgery, the kids decorated the tree. Kaitlyn had actually done all the lights by herself several days before...and as you can see in the very first picture in this post, she did a fabulous job. My friend Tina Fabiano came over and made my bow and ribbons for me, and got up on the ladder to hang them, too. So now, with a little direction and caution from the armchair where I rested, my kids decorated the Christmas tree BY THEMSELVES!

They did a FABULOUS job...my tree looks GREAT!!! And I am so grateful to have such wonderful, magical kids!!
Merry Christmas, everyone!!
